⭐ Juneteenth Talk with Deesha Philyaw, Author of ‘The Secret Lives of Church Ladies’ (DC Public Library) – VIRTUAL

Celebrate Juneteenth and join us for an author talk with Deesha Philyaw, live on the Library’s Facebook page on Thursday, June 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Philyaw will be joined by local author Tyrese Coleman to discuss Philyaw’s book, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies. Their conversation will focus on the nine stories in Philyaw’s collection that feature four generations of Black women and their search for joy and freedom.

Deesha Philyaw’s debut short story collection, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, won the 2021 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the 2020/2021 Story Prize, and the 2020 LA Times Book Prize: The Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction and was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction. The Secret Lives of Church Ladies focuses on Black women, sex and the Black church, and is being adapted for television by HBO Max with Tessa Thompson executive producing. Deesha is also a Kimbilio Fiction Fellow.

Tyrese L. Coleman is a writer, wife, mother and attorney. Her debut collection of stories and essays, How to Sit, was published by Mason Jar Press in 2018 and nominated for a 2019 PEN Open Book Award. Her work has appeared as a notable in Best American Essays 2018 and 2016 and nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
